Sit n Go’s are one of the most popular forms of poker tournament online. The tournament format is a one-table game with usually nine or ten players in the game and it starts as soon as the table is full.

Prize money is the total buy-ins from all the players and usually the top three places are paid out in the ratio 50%/30%/20%. So for example if it’s a $5+$0.50 tournament with ten players, the total prize fund is $50 split $25 for first place, $15 for second and $10 for third. The $0.50 is the fee to the poker room from each player.

Heads-up is the climax to all your hard work in the poker game. When you get to a heads-up situation, it means that you have eliminated all the other players from the tournament except one, your opponent in the heads-up match.

If you’re a novice poker player or you have not played much poker, there is a very good chance that you will never have played a heads-up game yet. It takes a lot of practice and gradual improvement before you get to the stage where you are one of the best two in the tournament, hopefully the strategies in this article will prepare you for it when it happens.

Check & raise and All-in strategy

Two very powerful weapons that you should learn how to use in your poker games are check/raise and all-in. Each of them can win you substantial pots when used correctly, but equally can be very dangerous to you if used at the wrong time or in the wrong way.

The check/raise is used to send a signal to the other players that you have a hand which is better than theirs. It’s a fairly subtle move and can be lost on a lot of poorer poker players and novices so for that reason it should only be used when playing at a table where your opponents are savvy enough to realize what you’re doing.

Online poker bluffing is very different to bluffing at poker in the real world and this is both an advantage and a disadvantage to you.

Bluffing online is a lot harder to spot than bluffing at a poker table in a casino or home game, that is a big advantage to you if you are the one who is doing the bluffing, but equally a disadvantage if you are trying to spot your opponent’s bluffs.

Rebuy tournament strategy

To rebuy or not – that is the question! Should you rebuy and if so how often?

Rebuys in online poker tournaments are where you are allowed to buy your way back into a tournament after you have lost all of your chips, normally there will be either limited (or single) rebuys or unlimited rebuys.

In the first instance, there isn’t really a strategy for rebuying, it is simply a way back into the tournament if you have been eliminated. You must decide whether the rebuy level is enough to give you a chance of progressing further, taking into account the chip stack sizes of your opponents.
